Rosemary is constantly gaslit and told what to do, and those around her don’t have her best interests at heart. Her agency is constantly stolen by those who want something from her – including her own husband. Of course, the movie also works extraordinarily well as a straightforward horror movie about creepy Devil worship.
Attention to this fast-paced story is a necessity in order to not miss The Big Lebowski’s best quotes and keen details. Beyond the film’s design, though, is a sense of daring that makes it stand out even among the other brilliant entries in director Martin Scorsese’s canon. Scorsese has always been known as a bold director for his energy, his innovative shots, his use of color and his work with actors, but Goodfellas is a film on another level. It’s Scorsese taking everything he’s learned in three decades of filmmaking and throwing all of that and more at the screen. For a perfect example, watch the “last day as a wiseguy” sequence near the end of the film. It documents Henry’s final day of freedom with a mix of astonishing cinematography, fearless editing, and classic music cues, and it still stands up against any film you saw competing at the Oscars in this or any year.
The good thing here is that at least we have evolved as a society to move past those decisions (we have, right?). Should we repeat the poorly aged things that put them on the radar in the first place? Disney’s 1994 masterpiece, The Lion King, draws its timeless essence from its inspiration, William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Heathers is considered to be quite a controversial film today. The dark comedy was one of Winona Ryder’s breakout roles and was a big hit when it netflix quiz first hit theatres back in 1988. In fact, the parody/disaster flick holds a very impressive score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Came to theatres in 1980, so it’s pretty much a given that many aspects of this film have been weakened by age. Well, they were most likely thinking about Oscar glory, as Williams probably thought this was his Forrest Gump (crossed with Big), while Coppola was hoping for a comeback after nearly two decades of creative misfires.

We never see the titular witch, so things like visual effects haven’t had the chance to age. The footage could just as easily have come from a smartphone instead of a handheld camera, and it has allowed this little movie from 1999 to transcend the major technological leaps that have occurred since its release. Suffice to say, this is not what people were expecting from director John Landis after “Animal House” and “The Blues Brothers.” In fact, Landis had this idea long before he directed those two films, having written the script back in the late ‘60s. It’s both horrifying and hilarious, employing that famous Landis charm while also scaring the pants off viewers with some truly mesmerizing special effects.

Schindler’s List is an epic historical drama film produced by Steven Spielberg. The film focuses on Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), a businessman who supports the Nazi party, as he becomes determined to save his Jewish workers from the Holocaust after witnessing the persecution of Jews in Poland. Despite his reputation for using cutting-edge filmmaking technology, Spielberg chose a more minimalistic approach for this film, using both stationary and handheld cameras and filming some scenes in actual Holocaust death camps in Poland. The film is deeply personal to Spielberg, touching on his Jewish heritage. The movie accurately recreates the atmosphere of the era it is set in, thanks to its use of an eclectic soundtrack featuring various artists, authentic costumes, vintage cars, and fourth-wall-breaking moments.

It’s hard to find the right balance between comedy and everything else, and many films either take one route or the other, rather than both. But finding a generally well-received comedy film that has aged well is even trickier. The Extra Terrestrial inspired a wave of movies with adorable creatures.
The cast is excellent, the famous twist of having two killers is still interesting, and best of all, that opening sequence still goes hard. Many movies have tried to do what “Scream” did – including its many sequels – but none have quite captured that bottled magic. Remaking a film already delivered to us with almost perfect execution by the great Alfred Hitchcock feels like a fool’s errand that should rarely, if ever, be attempted. If you had to pick one film in his legendary career to adapt for modern audiences, though, Rear Window feels like one of the safest bets.

Filled with fantastic performances and a palpable sense of paranoia and impending doom, “Rosemary’s Baby” is a timeless classic of the genre. Toy Story’s timeless magic exists thanks, in part, to its reliance on traditionally inanimate objects as characters. The lives of human characters evolve with technology, but toys are still toys, and while a modern remake of the film might involve a few more tablets and video games for a boy like Andy, action figures still haven’t gone out of style.
